Get “Top Notch Ready”
Being truly packed and ready on move day is the single most effective way of controlling the cost of your move. So, keep these moving tips in mind! Packing one room at a time is the best way to maintain mental and physical control of the sorting and packing process. (Easy to say, so hard to do!)
Packing Tips
We offer professional packing services, but if you are packing your own belongings, here are some helpful tips.
- Taping boxes: Tape the bottoms and tops of all boxes with packing tape, not masking or duct tape. (Don’t interlock the box flaps.)
- Packing boxes: To prevent crushing and cave-ins, fill the boxes completely. Do not have items protruding from the top or sides of the boxes.
- Drawers: Empty all furniture (such as dressers) and leave drawers in. This is the safest way to structurally protect your furniture. (Some exceptions apply.)
- Labeling: Label boxes on top and at least one side with a dark marker. For instance, MBR for master bedroom, LR for living room, etc.
- Box size:
- Small boxes (1.5 cubic feet): dense items like books, pantry/canned goods, paperwork/files, CD’s/DVD’s, and china.
- Medium boxes (3.1 cubic feet): dishes, cookware, and small appliances (like a coffee maker or toaster).
- Large boxes (4.5 cubic feet): light items like linens, clothes, small and medium sized pictures, and pillows.
- Dishes: Bubble wrap is recommended for dishes and glassware as it provides the most protection.
- Frames: Pack all framed pictures smaller than 15’ x 13’ in boxes with bubble wrap. Vertical placement within the box is safer for all picture frames.
- Lamps: All lamps and lampshades should be packed in separate heavy-duty boxes.
- Do not pack: Flammable items (such as aerosol cans, lighter fluid, or gas/propane tanks) or open liquids (like household cleaners, paint, and toiletries).
- Pack a personal bag: Items like medications, change of clothes for all involved, children’s items, and all personal toiletries should be left to the side and taken by the customer.

- Prepare a bag of personal items that you will need for the night and day of move.
- Keep in your possession all keys, checkbook, and documents needed.
- Unplug and remove contents of all appliances, including disconnecting gas or water lines.
- Reserve parking/loading dock for our truck at both locations.
- Reserve the elevator if applicable.
- Create a floor plan of your new home.
- Place labels on items that are NOT to be moved.
- Some items may be better suited to move in your vehicle (i.e., small potted plants, small fragile or unpacked items), but our staff will be glad to load and unload your car for you.
- Purge and downsize your belongings well in advance of moving day.
- Clean/dust all: Furniture, rugs, and carpets, to avoid bringing old dirt and dust into your new home.
- If capable, disassemble any furniture, as well as remove loose shelves and interfering doors (if needed). We will gladly do this if you are unable.
- Keep our access in mind (i.e., move cars and clear paths).
Don’t worry, we’ll handle all:
- Hanging clothes in wardrobe boxes
- Large removable: glass/wooden/marble tabletops
